sources relate that there has been a steady influx of people into California since the time of the gold rush. Historian Leonard L. Richards relates in his text
on California history the tremendous degree to which the gold rush affected California demographically, as well as the subsequent history of the United States. Richards writes that "No sooner had
gold been discovered in California than the question arose over how to get there," as well as how to get the gold back to the east coast (Richards 132). It
was due to this need that the transcontinental railroad was constructed. Other factors affecting population density in California include the appeal of its climate, the emergence of the film
industry, and then, the emergency of the computer industry in Silicon Valley. The U.S. Census Bureau (USCB) calculates population density by determining the "dividing the total number of residents by
the number of square miles of land area in the specified geographic area" (USCB). According to the 2000 Census, the population density for California, on average is 217.2 (USCB). There
are both negative and positive factors associated with high population density. For example, high population density is associated with water shortages within California, while a positive correlation is that high
