attention, in the public mindset, it tends to be regarded as secondary and considerably far down in the cultural hierarchy of the topics that are generally regarded as the "real"
culture, such as fine art and literature or the way in which science, medicine or political studies are regarded. Nevertheless, popular culture is the defining factor in the everyday life
of society, as it shapes and influences attitudes and provides a continuous sense of cohesion and unity to the collective sense of being part of an overall societal structure. As
human beings are social animals and the lone ascetic hermit is an anomaly, rather than the norm, there seems to be an engrained desire to check to see how ones
personal behavior, attitudes, acquisitions, etc., measure up against ones neighbors. In other words, we are constantly checking to see it we lie within the norm of our society. Popular
culture attempts to provide the answer to this question, which is why it is fascinating on both a sociological and psychological level. Scholars, sociologists, political commentators, and many others feel
that American popular culture indicates the social decline of the US, a decline in values, civic pride, personal responsibility and integrity. The following discussion draws on four essays that discuss
