thing he is the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, and for another thing he has been a witness to many more tense world issues than perhaps, any other pope
in history. He has seen the fall of Communism, spoken out against many injustices, traveled extensively, changed some of the Catholic traditions, and generally become involved in a world that
is incredibly fast-paced and technologically advanced. He is a pope that has had great influence, consciously so, on many people, and a pope that is incredibly active in relationship to
many different occurrences and beliefs. "The announcement two decades ago that the church had its first non-Italian pope in 455 years astonished the world and worried authorities in
the Soviet bloc. John Paul used his moral stature to help Poles stay the course during a Communist military crackdown against the Solidarity free trade movement in the early 1980s.
Cardinal Glemp told the pope that his visits to Poland helped inspire his countrymen to win independence from communism" (DEmilio, 1996; P A6). These facts are just a smattering of
the involvement Pope John Paul II has had in relationship to the world around him. He began as a very charming man who has held many hearts in his hands,
