type of advertising. Discussion There is a wide-spread belief that computer users despise pop-up ads, finding them annoying and intrusive (Wegert, 2002). However, studies have shown that Internet users are "more tolerant of pop-ups that previously thought" (Wegert, 2002). Wegert refers to a survey that found nearly three-fourths of Web users in the U.S. "accept limited use of pop-ups, and 47 percent agree as many as two to six ads per hour are appropriate to support free content" (2002). But despite the fact that they keep the content free, they remain irritating to almost all users, particularly when they cover the content of the Web page the viewer is trying to see. While it seems that most users are okay with pop-ups, there are those who hate them so much theyre "willing to pay good money to retaliate" by buying commercial pop-up blockers (Wegert, 2002). From all of this it seems that the most logical conclusion is that reactions to pop-ups vary with the individual user. The student can, at this point, put in their own experience with pop-ups. One thing that suggests itself immediately is that students spend a lot of time on-line doing research, and pop-ups can be distracting, as well as slowing the computers operation. That means the student will spend more time than absolutely necessary, simply because the ads slow the machine down. Pop-up blockers are available for sale; they can also be downloaded for free from a number of web sites. However, they dont seem to work very well; ads always seem to get through. It may be that the people who develop the ads work quickly to stay ahead of the blockers necessitating constant improvements in the software.
