has become the leading cause of death among African-American adolescents and the second leading cause of death in all adolescents, regardless of ethnicity (Daane, 2003). It is clear that
children who have been exposed to violence are not immune to its effects. Studies indicate that children who have been exposed to and/or victimized by domestic violence "are at
a greater risk of becoming violent offenders themselves" (Daane, 2003, p. 23). These alarming statistics have left psychologists and sociologists scrabbling to answer the question, "Why do kids kill?"
It is being suggested with increasing frequency that there is a distinct correlation between poor parenting and children with a propensity for violence. Inadequate parenting is a complicated
issue and can manifest itself in several ways including attachment disorder, lack of emotional attunement, neglect and abuse (both physical and emotional). Attachment disorder, also known as bonding
disorder, describes the difficulties some parents face establishing a loving relationship with their children (Chapman, 2002). Dr. John Bowlby (1979) developed this concept, and in his attachment theory, he
explained, "Evidence is accumulating that human beings of all ages are happiest and able to deploy their talents to best advantage when they are confident that, standing behind them,
there are one or more trusted persons who will come to their aid should difficulties arise. The person trusted, also known as an attachment figure, can be considered as
