The inability to be assured that an individual will have a continuing supply of food is usually directly related to the ability of that individual to have enough resources to pay for food or nutrition. Food insecurity is the state when access to nutritionally adequate and healthy food are either not available, limits or uncertain and the ability to obtain the required food is the result of socially unacceptable manners. THE LINK BETWEEN POVERTY AND NUTRITION Poverty and food insecurity have a negative influence on the diet of low income children (Childhood Hunger, 1999). Limited household income is directly related to food insecurity and both are associated with low intakes of fruits and vegetables (Childhood Hunger, 1999). The children of poorer families also have less opportunity to consume dairy products which are needed to fulfill their daily requirement of calcium (Childhood Hunger, 1999). It is also known that children of low income families usually consume an insufficient number of calories and in an effort to cope with limited food dollars, these families will purchase less expensive food which has a higher fat content (Childhood Hunger, 1999). Many women, worldwide, including the women in the United States have the ability to obtain free food supplements for their babies and young children. Despite these programs, a large portion of these children still suffer from a condition known as under nutrition which means that they suffer from a lack of protein and calories (Bower, 1997). The stresses of poverty may cause psychologically vulnerable women to be unable to care for a child, which may also foster under nutrition (Bower, 1997).
