Discussion The way the question is posed cannot be considered anything other than racist, and that suggests that the first point to be considered is whether blacks actually have
freedom of choice. The idea that blacks make "poor decisions" that result in incarceration perhaps has some degree of merit, but it also buys into the current white mindset that
if blacks only made decent decisions, worked hard, played by the rules, etc., they would not still be overwhelmingly disadvantaged, poor, hopeless and depressed. This thinking ignores the fact
that blacks are relegated by the white, capitalist power structure to the margins of existence and that institutionalized racism is a fact of life in the United States (Street, 2007).
However, it has gone underground to such a degree that most whites truly believe it no longer exists (Street, 2007). Whites are the recipients of what is called "white privilege,"
the ability to have a good life simply because they are white. It is so ingrained that most people dont even realize its happening, which is why blacks are still
struggling (Street, 2007). In a society that continues to perpetuate these attitudes-even worse, that is completely oblivious to the fact these attitudes exist-blacks remain marginalized; when it comes to choice,
few believe they have any options at all (Street, 2007). Street notes that whites, as well as some blacks, have adopted the stance that blacks are struggling with poverty because
they decline to accept "personal responsibility" for their actions, in the way whites supposedly do (Street, 2007, p. 57). This message is comforting to whites, because it means that they
can lay the blame for blacks plight on the black community itself, in a classic case of "blame-the-victim" (Street, 2007). Do blacks really make poor decisions? We can argue that
