The following is noted about the history of Polynesia: "Once they had reached the mid-ocean archipelagos of Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, these seafarers - the immediate ancestors of the Polynesians
- were alone in the ocean, for only they had the canoes and navigational skills needed to push so far into the Pacific. The gaps between islands widen greatly in
the eastern Pacific and the prevailing winds become less and less favorable for sailing to the east" ("Wayfinders: Polynesian History and Origin," 2008). One can see why the voyagers wanted
to settle, as the journey was so long. Today, many of these islands are developed, or are in stages of development, and they attract many tourists. The history of
the islands is important to know because they tell a tale related to how government evolved in the region over time. For example, in Tahiti, the first sign of European
consequences were felt (Campbell, 1998). It had, before the Europeans influenced the natives, been a paradise of sorts, with a system that certainly saw equality (Campbell, 1998). Yet, Campbell
(1998) reports: "European explorers came to Tahiti at a time when the political status quo was being challenged from within and found themselves embroiled in the contest" (p.16). Each island
is its own entity and while some are ruled by other nations such as French Polynesian and Tokelau, others govern themselves entirely. Therefore, some political systems are aligned with the
indigenous people of the island, while others are associated with larger, well known countries. Tonga for example is one island that has been rather independent. King George Tupou is Chief
