Polygamy, the practice of having more than one spouse, has been practiced by numerous peoples over time. In contemporary times, however, polygamy is
found primarily in the cultures of indigenous peoples in less developed countries. One prominent Christian group, however, has also practiced polygamy in the past and, in fact, certain members
of that group continue to do so today. That group is the Church of Latter Day Saints based in Utah. Between 1852
and 1890 polygamy was commonly practiced in Utah among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Church and State, 2004). This religious practice was abolished
by the Church only when it faced religious prosecution in the form of the 1887 Edmunds-Turner Act, an Act that officially dissolved the Church of Latter Day Saints and sequestered
its assets (The Economist, 1988). To recover the Church as forced to surrender one of the most basic tenants of its religious practice, the practice of polygamy (Church and
State, 2004). Although the primary branch of the LDS long ago banned polygamy, some of its members have chosen to ignore
that ban and to continue with their lives as though everything were normal. Not surprisingly, some of those members have found themselves in court fighting charges of polygamy.
