pollution levels dramatically (Economist, 2004). The World Bank has published a report that states of the worlds 20 most polluted cities 16 are in China (Economist, 2004). The problem of
Chinese pollution is not only limited to China, it has been estimated that up to 25% of the pollution in the air in Los Angeles may come from China (CBS
News, 2000). The problem may be argued as starting with the drive for industrialization by Mao, but with increased commercial freedoms and the growth of commercial markets and there
is a lack of oversight and without serous motivations to reduce pollution the main motivation for development may be the employment generation of the new industries (Economist, 2004). However,
with the new freedoms there has also been an emergent of environmentalist groups in China. Which are starting to have an impact on the way corporate governance takes place (Lu,
2007). There are many issues; air pollution may be seen as very problematic. Two of the major air pollutants are sulphur dioxide and soot, both of which are caused
that coal combustion. This air pollution creates acid rain, which falls on about 30% of Chinas land mass ( EIA, 2003). Half of the coal produced by China is used
in furnaces and boilers and may be seen as the single largest source of urban air pollution (EIA, 2003). Chinas use of energy is driven mainly by the use
of Coal, in 2003 it was estimated to provide 63.4% of all the primary energy consumed, with oil making up 25.8% and hydroelectricity and natural gas only making up 6.9%
