many environmental matters. The areas of interest which were once dominated by activist groups such as Greenpeace have become politically popular and international moves such as the Brundtland Report and
the Kyoto Protocol have added pressure to consideration of environmental factors. The general public have also adopted more green measures, ideas such as saving energy to reduce carbon emissions and
therefore lower pollution rate to look after the earth for future generations are now wide scale ideals. However, there is one area where this consideration becomes less immediate. This is
a time when consumers are relaxed and do not want to think about unpleasant truths when they are positively contributing to the tourisms industry. However, these activities, like any other,
may be seen as adding to environmental issues, especially air and water pollution. Tourism is a mufti million dollar industry, covering everything from travelling by air and the use
of cruise ships to the visiting of theme parks and attractions and the use of a car. In 2004 the tourism industry was worth a total of $5.5 trillion (Wagner,
2005). In the United States the travel and tourism sector is very important to the economy, in 2004 employing more than 7.3 million people, creating $163 billion in wages
and for government creating a very important income; $100 billion in taxes (US Chamber of Commerce, 2005). It is easy it see why, when an industry is this important, to
the state and economy as well as to the individuals who value their leisure time, where issues such as water and air pollution are often overlooked or remain a low
