The pollutants that plague the county are attributable to a number of sources ranging from untreated domestic wastes from homes and businesses that is released directly into water bodies to coal-burning power plants that emit carcinogens and other toxic substances into the countys air. Freese (2003) reports that in the U.S. as a whole, 30,000 people annually are killed by coal emissions from coal burning power plants. The predominance of coal burning power plants in the Pennsylvania area is not surprising given that Pittsburg was the first coal mining community in our nation. The mines themselves present significant environmental concerns. Thousands of acres of land are impacted by the mining and surrounding waterbodies, as well as the groundwater itself, are polluted by mine discharges. Abandoned mines in Greene County contribute a variety of pollutants to the surrounding waterbodies. One of the most concerning, of course, is arsenic (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2004). The Natural Resources Defense Council (2004) reports that millions of tons of coal ash have been dumped by power plants into poorly designed and controlled landfills in the Greene County area and that the leachate from these wastes contaminate ground and surface waters such as the Monongahela River, the river from which Greene County draws most of its drinking water, drinking water that is now: "polluted with arsenic, boron, manganese, molybdenum and other contaminants" Hatfields Ferry Power Station in Monongahela Township and Fort Martin Power Station in Maidsville, West Virginia, in particular, are major ...
