Data regarding asthma attacks in each country are provided. The reason for the high level of air pollution in China is discussed. The writer then discusses hybrid cars as an alternative. high levels of pollution; air pollution is due to the countrys reliance on coal and water pollution is due to untreated wastes, water shortages and deforestation (The World Factbook, 2001).
In fact, Chinas concentrations of total suspended particulates and sulfur dioxide are among the highest in the world (World Resource Institute, 2002). In some cities, such as Taiyuan and Lanzhou,
the levels of sulfur dioxide are more than ten times the guidelines established by the World Heath Organization (World Resource Institute, 2002). These levels have to do with the emissions
related to coal consumption in combination with inadequate sulfur control measures in the country (World Resource Institute, 2002). Coal burning accounts for about 75 percent of Chinas commercial energy needs
(World Resource Institute, 2002). That compares to a world average of 27 percent and only 17 percent in Japan (World Resource Institute, 2002). The use of coal leaves the citizens
of China suffering similar effects of the air pollution indoors (World Resource Institute, 2002). Indoor asthma attacks averaged 47,755 annually (World Resource Institute, 2002). Only one-third of urban Chinese have
access to gas for cooking (World Resource Institute, 2002). The situation has been compounded with an increase in the use of motor vehicles in the larger cities, such as Beijing
and Shanghai (World Resource Institute, 2002). Worse, the greater majority of these vehicles were using leaded gasoline, causing more pollution (World Resource Institute, 2002). The World Health Organization reported 75,107,000
annual asthma attacks of as a result of the air pollution in China (World Resource Institute, 2002). By contrast, the United States reports 10.6 million asthma victims (National Center for
