century. They were individuals who apparently both suffered identity struggles, and individuals whose lives ended before their time. both artists clearly went through periods of development in their art, wherein
they ultimately reached sort of a summit prior to their deaths, perhaps having developed into their own unique style and form of expression in the world of art. The following
paper examines the style and themes of the two artists, illustrating part of their development as artists as it involves their period of surrealism/abstract that existed just prior to their
break into the total abstract style. The paper illustrates that in these images discussed there are clear indicators of the abstract period to come, the abstract period that would define
them as artists. In essence, the works discuss are works that exist almost as the last step before their emergence. Pollock and Rothko During the 1940s both of
these painters had not reached the peak of their form of expression. In essence, they had not really found their particular voice in the art world, their particular voice for
expression, but were almost at the point where they discovered their unique styles. In the case of Pollock his peak hit when he happened upon his style of dripping paint
and splashing paint on a canvas. He was known as Jack the Dripper and this particular style was what he was known for. But, just prior to that, he was
working with a very surrealistic, rather than seriously abstract, style and theme. In the case of Rothko the works he would ultimately become known for were very braid, and
