are quite enlightening and delve heavily into the scientific underpinnings of growing crops. The author looks at farming and why human beings grow certain plants. There is a look at
numerous things people plant such as apples and potatoes and even marijuana. In some way, Pollan (2001) suggests that the plants actually grow in accordance with mans needs and there
is a dance between the evolution of man and the evolution of plant life. Pollan (2001) in the context of this work will eventually address the problem of genetically altered
fruits and vegetables and seems to side with the idea that the new ones are safer. Indeed, it appears that while the organic fruits and vegetables are a known entity,
they are sprayed with pesticides and are not safe, so it makes more sense to choose the genetically engineered fruits and vegetables. The book is ordered to explore four
different subjects. The first one is the apple, that is designed to quench the thirst for sweetness and the second is the Tulip which fulfills mans quest for beauty (Pollan,
2001). The desire for intoxication is fulfilled by the marijuana plant and control is equated with the potatoes (Pollan, 2001). The potato-the vegetable of focus in this particular investigation-is interestingly
the one that is equated with control; it is noted that the potatoes that grows in the wild is sometimes not edible (Pollan, 2001). The author writes from the
plants point of view in covering a number of species, or at least he tries. Obviously, a plant has no consciousness, but this authors quirky take on science is something
that is very interesting. Yet, Pollan (2001) does not neglect science here and does discuss specific differences in genetically engineered potatoes and those that are not altered in that way.
