Communist government continues to micromanage the society, despite the economic reforms of recent decades. Author Ying Zhu has pointed out that "Chinas transformation in the mid-1980s from a planned state
economy to a free-market economy" altered virtually everything Western scholars believe they know about the film industry in China (Wang, 2004, p 1119). Nevertheless, Chinese cinema is still a product
of its history and remains integrally tied to issues of politics, in regards to the government and public taste, which serve to shape and influence its filmmakers and its films.
Polshek Fus book Between Shanghai and Hong Kong, The Politics of Chinese Cinemas relates the political factors that governed the early years
of Chinese cinema and how the Chinese film industry survived the chaotic period between 1935 and 1950 (Wei, 2005). In 1935, Chinese cinema was centered in Shanghai, but by 1950,
Hong Kong was prominent. In recent years, Shanghai has been gaining in prominence once again (Wei, 2005). Fus book explores the criticism of Hong Kong films as being either "treasonous"
or "un-Chinese," which is a critique largely derived from the fact that their content has historically been "so apolitical" (McDaniel, 2004, p. 115). Considering Hong Kongs colonial status, it is
difficult to see how this critique could have been avoided (McDaniel, 2004). While the current political climate in China is more progressive than in previous decades, Chinese filmmakers still
have to contend with uncertainty and "the fact of censorship," which makes visual allegory a prominent factor in their art (Marchetti, 2003, p. 1232). In his text China into Film:
