the opportunity to openly love. The political reality in Shakespeares play is predominantly evident through the feud that exists between the two families. In the following paper we examine the
political elements in Shakespeares play, discussing the feud and other political factors. Politics in Romeo and Juliet As mentioned, "Romeo and Juliet is not just a love story.
It is about honor, duty, loyalty, politics, family, and passion" (Anonymous Romeo and Juliet: Whats Going On? 5.asp). In first discussing the political aspects or themes evident in Romeo and
Juliet we look at the family feuds, which are essentially political struggles between one family and another: "In addition to love at first sight, the feud between the Montagues and
Capulets is also a main theme of the play" (Webster %3A+Themes). Interestingly enough, "The English had been involved in a deadly feud for years. This one wasnt between powerful families,
but within Englands royal family," a fact which surely led to Shakespeares creation of Romeo and Juliet (Anonymous William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet book14.htm). "The play is set in
Verona, Italy, where a feud has broken out between the families of the Montegues and the Capulets. The servants of both houses open the play with a brawling scene that
eventually draws in the noblemen of the families and the city officials, including Prince Escalus" (Anonymous Romeo and Juliet: Short Summary shortsumm.html). The Prince is the only one who seems
capable of controlling rage and emotion when it comes to the feud, illustrating a desire to make peace and to keep civil order in the political system and the community.
