can be defined as tyrannicide and if tyrannicide itself is ethical. Various philosophers have asserted, over the centuries, that the people are justified in overthrowing a tyrant: in fact, it is morally better to do so than it is to allow the state to be ruled by such a despot. We would have to assess first of all, therefore, whether or not Julius Caesar can be so defined. However, even if this is the case, is it also true that assassination is an ethically accepted method of ridding the state of a tyrant? Rothbard (2002) citing de la Boetie, maintains that this is not necessarily so: de la Boeties view is that in order to be free, the people need only to "resolve to serve no more" and to "support (the tyrant) no longer" (de la Boetie, cited in Rothbard, 2002). In a sense, it is not action which is required, but rather a refusal to act. As Rothbard states, this is actually a more radical option than assassination, since the latter takes place within the existing political system whereas the former, since it constitutes mass civil disobedience, is capable of transforming the system itself. In addition, as Rothbard also observes, it is a much more convincing reflection of the genuine will of the people than an assassination, which may well be merely factional and not represent the majoritys true intent at all. Let us consider, therefore, the circumstances surrounding the conspiracy and Caesars death: was he in fact a tyrant, and if he was, should we regard his assassination as firstly, ethical, and secondly, representing the true will of the people?
