way through various stages of Hell. It is a work that sees the punishment of many evil individuals, all being essentially punished according to their particular sins, with the most
horrible sinners getting the worst punishments imaginable. In light of such truths it is often understood that this work is about righteousness and evil and Dantes journey to try to
be righteous. However, it is not necessarily just a story about religion for many of the incidents, individuals, and punishments are related to politics. With this in mind the following
paper examines the role of politics in Dantes Inferno and then presents three different politicians of more recent times and what their punishments may be according to their crimes.
Politics in Dantes Inferno One critic of the Inferno states, "the most surprising thing to me about reading Dantes Hell is how little it has to do with religion,
and how much it has to do with the politics of the church and the secular politics of Florence...Dante appears to have used an imaginary afterlife as a means of
revenge on his own political enemies and those that did not conform to his own medieval world view" However, we also note that in the Inferno, or in Hell, Dante
meets many individuals that he actually admired. When they were in the third ring, a ring that was devoted to those who committed violence against God such as blasphemers, sodomites,
and usurers, "Dante spoke affectionately with one sodomite, Ser Brunetto, who had been something of a mentor for him when he was alive. There other Florentines, also people Dante respected"
