is unforgettable. He delves head first into historical relationships between the United States and Latin America, outlining everything from slavery to foreign policy related to other nations. He goes back
in time to the days of the earliest presidents and contemplates not only the specific things that went on at the time, but also the prevalent attitudes about those who
live in those countries. In fact, the slant of this particular book is that it highlights the prejudicial notions that were around at the time. An example is that the
author relays the fact that John Quincy Adams remarks that those in Latin America were short and lazy, amongst other derogatory notions. These sorts of things are woven into the
authors discussion. This well researched book includes nineteen chapters beginning with a general look at Latin America, and then quickly goes on to Mexico and the Caribbean. Dictatorships are the
focus of a couple of chapters as well. Chapter by chapter, the author examines policy as it respects Latin America and the United States, with the notion that the U.S.
has not viewed the region in a kindly fashion. This is completed in an organized manner. Democracy, and its relation to Latin America, is a compelling subject addressed by the
author in the context of various portions of the work. Also, the ideas are summed up nicely in the final chapter. Clearly, the opinion that comes through in this book
is very important to a discussion on relations between the U.S. and Latin America. The author is hard-hitting, and blames poor relations essentially on the prejudice exhibited by leaders of
