plays reflecting the increased social awareness of political issues, and later in the Renaissance to reflect the way theatre and drama was controlled. The role of drama remained to entertain,
but the social and political elements can be seen as particularly notable during this period. The awareness of the playwrights can be seen in many instances; Shakespeare one of the
most prolific and well known writers of this period summarizes this well in Hamlet where it is stated; "The purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now,
was and is, tohold, as twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scornher own image, and the very age and body of the time his
form and pressure." (Hamlet, 3.1.20-4) In this quote Hamlet is discussing the role of acting and the way it holds a mirror to society, and reflect the way many
plays and playwrights may use alternate time settings and adapt many of the classical stories, but incorporate realism with the use of mimicry and metaphor (Braunmuller and Hattaway 93;
Kennedy 64). It is interesting to note that drama was using similar tools other areas where metaphor and mimicry was also seen, such as painting also seen in the renaissance
(Braunmuller and Hattaway 93). In maybe argued that within the theatre, the use of classical approaches created a scenario in which social hierarchies and the role of the monarchy could
