governmental processes but in practically all of our societal interactions. Not only can politics be equated with power, they are often a matter of taste, a very one-sided and
ethnocentric taste. If any one factor could be said to drive the equation of politics and power it would be the mass media (Strinati 10). When we consider
that the worlds five biggest media companies (AOL Time Warner, The Walt Disney Company, Bertelsmann AG, Viacom, and News Corporation) are western countries with primarily U.S. ownership we can better
understand the world hierarchy in political power that is so obviously in play the world over. We can also better understand popular culture as it has emerged in the
modern era because it too is an important element in modern day politics. The social issues, morals and cultural values that characterize popular
culture have been particularly concerning since the 1990s (Weyrich 17). Our political system itself has been the home for a volatile struggle between our nations traditional values and liberal
ideology. Weyrich (17), however, contends that the culture war that erupted in this struggle is now over, that liberal ideology and the political correctness that goes along with it
have won out. This triumph is concerning to say the least. Weyrich (17) warns, in fact, that we are headed to cultural disintegration where our traditional values will
become obsolete unless new institutions emerge to protect those values (Weyrich 17). Weyrichs (17) concerns regarding the disintegration of American traditional
