and that you have noted the belief, common in the US at this time, that it is somehow inappropriate or disloyal to the troops in the field to question anything
about the Bush Administrations policies toward this conflict, which brings up the question of whether patriotism requires that people not question their government or its decisions. In this regard, what
does history show about this question? Being from the South, the current fervor over patriotism seems reminiscent of the way that many Southerners felt compelled by patriotism to their
state to fight in the American Civil War even if they did not own slaves. In 1863, The governor of North Carolina, Zebulon Vance, bemoaned the "disloyalty" to the Confederacy
that existed in Western North Carolina (McKinney 5). Vance, in his letters, equated service in the Confederate army with the service of those men who fought in Americas War for
Independence, writing that "Liberty and independence can only be gathered of blood and misery sustained and fostered by devoted patriotism and heroic manhood" (McKinney 5). As this indicates, many Southerners
did not perceive the Civil War in terms of right or wrong, but in terms of patriotism and the sentiment "right or wrong, my country." Naturally, today, this unquestioning patriotism
seems remarkable misguided, which brings up the question of how future generations will regard US decisions during this time of crisis. Following 9/11, the government moved quickly to enact
