Looking at the plays of Shakespeare from a political perspective is somewhat complex, not least because the political
influences which would have been extant in Shakespeares time do not necessarily correspond to the issues and standpoints which he himself presents in the dramas. In addition, there are a
number of ways of looking at the topic of politics itself which can be applied to Shakespearian drama: party politics, gender politics, international political theory and so on.
It is also possible to consider
Shakespeares works from a modern political standpoint, especially when considering the way in which social and cultural issues were treated in Elizabethan times as opposed to a modern perspective. It
would, therefore, perhaps be useful to look at three of Shakespeares play from the point of view of specific political angles, and by doing so demonstrate that the ideas and
attitudes which he explored could be seen as equally valid both in his own time and in the present day.
