always simple, especially poetry from decades, or centuries ago. This is because what was common knowledge in days gone by is not necessarily knowledge for the modern reader. As such
researching poets and their work is often important to understanding what their poetry is about. In other cases, however, some poetry is rather evident in its topic or focus. The
following paper examines three political poems and three non-political poems. The political poems are William Butler Yeats The Second Coming, Henry Lawsons Freedom on the Wallaby, and Percy Bysshe Shelleys
England in 1819. The three non-political poems are William Wordsworths A Slumber did my Spirit Seal, Thomas Fords There is a Lady Sweet and Kind, and Christina Rosettes A Birthday."
Political and Non-Political Poetry The discussion of political poems begins with Yeats The Second Coming. Even if a person did not know that this was a political poem it
would be evident that this is a poem about destruction and loss. This is evident in the opening lines which state, "TURNING and turning in the widening gyre/ The falcon
cannot hear the falconer;/ Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold" (Yeats 1-3). The narrator then speaks of how anarchy has been let loose on the world and refers to
anarchy as "mere" (Yeats 4). Then there is talk of blood and of innocence that is "drowned" (Yeats 6). The reader does not necessarily need to know what the
poem is about for in these lines one can sense that it is about blood and warfare perhaps. This, in itself, speaks of politics because politics are always involved in
