The student considering the most important development which have occurred in the world during their lifetime would be
faced with a difficult task to choose the most important of these changes. Two of the most obvious categories, however, would certainly be those relating to world politics and
those relating to the environment. The fall of the Soviet Union would jump immediately to mind as being one of the most important events of the Twentieth Century, not
just of the last couple of decades. In terms of the environment, overpopulation has certainly taken its toll, a toll which has increased geometrically over the last couple of
decades alone. The problems with overpopulation translate into a variety of environmental impacts, in fact, not the least of which is global warming. We have thus narrowed the
hundreds of events which have had a global significance in the past couple of decades down to just three, the dissolution of the USSR, overpopulation, and global warming.
It should be evident to the student that, indeed, the dissolution of the USSR ranks high among the most important political event of the Twentieth
Century. This collapse has resulted in numerous world developments. One of the most important has been the attempted transition of Russia from a communist system to a democratic
one. Russias recent political reorganization, however, has left her in a quagmire of confusion. She no longer functions as the world power she once was and, as a
