who looked at politics and the necessity for law in a particular manner. Hobbes is another theorist who also evaluated the need for laws. How should law manifest in society?
Much of the answer goes to other ideas about God, the nature of man, and morality. Laws are after all ways of enforcing morality, at least to some extent. Above
all, they are meant to organize society. Spinoza (2004) looks at such issues and says: "A dominion then, whose well-being depends on any mans good faith, and whose affairs
cannot be properly administered, unless those who are engaged in them will act honestly, will be very unstable. On the contrary, to insure its permanence, its public affairs should be
so ordered, that those who administer them, whether guided by reason or passion, cannot be led to act treacherously or basely." One may relate this to Montesquieus political theory. To
Montesquieu (1752) there is a natural impulse that Hobbes for example attributes to mankind. He explains that the "idea of empire and dominion is so complex, and depends on so
many other notions, that it could never be the first which occurred to the human understanding." There is certainly argument in respect to whether or not people need law, or
whether or not they can regulate society themselves. The idea of anarchy is supported by some. Of course, none of the theorists would support that notion, but certainly it deserves
a look. The idea of lawlessness would likely result in disarray. People are not always kind and throughout history--even before civilization--there was rape, murder and thievery. People know this because
the Ten Commandments reference things such as killing, stealing, adultery and so forth. Man has always had such tendencies and a good society must make some laws in order to
