During these ancient times, great thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle contemplated the science of politics, viewing it as having "an ethic end", which was ultimately "to make better and happier citizens" and to perpetuate the formulation of what is known as "the good life" (Suarez-Iniguez, 1994; p. 31). The writings produced by Augustine and Aquinas in the Middle Ages indicate that political science during that era of the worlds history had come to be understood as "the attempt to achieve Christian virtues and obtain eternal life" (p. 31). By the sixteenth century, however, the science of politics and its resultant theories began to be perceived as a direct means to the attainment and preservation of power (p. 31). As the centuries have progressed, so has the science of politics and the theories that have been born of this science. As individual states have formed and reformed across time, several main political theories have emerged that concern the state and its place in international relations. Although strikingly similar in some areas and vastly different in others, these primary theories have developed into separate and distinct political systems of belief, each upholding its own ideals regarding the socioeconomic role of the individual state and its citizens in regard to international commerce and relations in a globalized world. There are four basic political theories of the state as it exists in international relations that have developed in world politics over the past century.
