The original Constitution Act of 1867 set up a system of government which differed in many respects from that in the United States.
Rather than being organized as a republic, Canada is a constitutional monarchy and has a parliamentary system of government. The government is broken into legislative, executive and judicial
branches with the legislative and executive power being joined. The elected majority of the legislature is the responsibility of the executive branch of Canadian government. It is the
executive branch of government which proposes legislation and law while the legislature adopts those laws and votes on executive recommendations for budgets, taxes, etc. The judiciary branch, much like
our own judiciary branch, is charged with interpreting the law. Canadians vote under a plurality voting system, a system where each citizen age eighteen or over is entitled to
cast their vote in a local Parliament election. These votes determine who will win a seat in the House of Commons.
Canadas head of state is Britains Queen Elizabeth II and she appoints the Governor General. This appointment is largely made on the recommendation of the prime minister, however.
The Prime Minister is an elected official who represents the leader of the political party who is in control of the House of Commons.
