should be considered. When looking at the political situation South Korea is one of the most democratic countries located in the Asia, although the practice of the Democratic model
of politics is relatively new to the country. The first democratic elections were held in South Korea in 1987, resulting in the institutional structure of the different political parties having
weak foundations which tends to result in movements towards coalescence, and political support is often given based on particular leaders of candidate for president, rather than political party affiliations. There
has been a recent changes in the political situation, especially with the relationship with the United States. In 2002 the presidential elections resulted in a self educated lawyer by the
name of Roh Moo-hyun becoming president (Manyin, 2003). The political pledges of this president included political changes to make the system more transparent, and the government more accountable to people
and a determination to try and increase the level of the equality of South Korea within the political alliance that had been formed with the United States (Manyin, 2003). However,
this is not a policy favorable to the United States, especially with the commitment to continue with the "sunshine policy", a policy started by the previous president Kim Dae Jung,
with significant attempt to engage with North Korea, and harsh criticism of the US administrations approach to North Korea (Manyin, 2003). The situation has now changed; the 2007 elections
saw a majority election of Lee Myung-bak, who took power in February 2008. The significant differences this president is it is the first elected president have a business background, and
has been utilizing this knowledge in order to take economic reform for the country, with forms have included increasing the level of competition within the economy, including deregulation as well
