that the film deals with African American people, and predominantly African American women, it is not difficult to image that it is a film which may also subtly examine, or
present, issues concerning political science. This is because the film offers the viewer images of the struggles of African Americans, struggles that are directly related to political science in relationship
to the position of African Americans in society. The following paper examines the existence of political science in the 1985 Steven Spielberg film "The Color Purple" which starred Whoopi Goldberg,
Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover to mention a few of the predominant actresses/actors in the film. The Color Purple When we think of political science we do not
often think of the condition fo the African Americans within that realm of study. However, political science is a subject that concerns different cultures as well as different genders. In
the film "The Color Purple" we see a great deal of concern for the position of the African American, and for women of that particular culture. We are made to
envision that the society, the political scientists of the past and present when the story takes place, that has generally oppressed the African American people into the position they are
in. They were not offered many opportunities because of political practices and as such we are given such characters as Whoopi Goldbergs and Oprah Winfreys, as well as Danny Glovers.
We see Whoopis character as one who has continuously been oppressed by men, and these are African American men who have no power in their society except power over their
women. This is the reason behind the negative and ignorant and fearful character detailed in Danny Glovers character. It is also a reality that Oprahs character does not appreciate, though
