one of the reasons the American political system has been so successful is that one party initiates social programs while in control of the government and then the other comes
in to balance the budget afterward. Politicians involved on both sides likely would prefer a different view of their efforts, particularly those on the side of conservatism that struggles
against the costly social programs born of liberal perspective. One approach to liberalism is that its political ideals "compete and conflict with lingering

If society is just only to the point that it serves its least advantaged member, then the case of Lavelle Bentley highlights not only political
but also economic gender inequality (Mallozzi, 2001). A working single mother, her company was sold during the time that she had been absent on paid maternity leave. She
was terminated while on that leave, which under the rules of equal opportunity is not supposed to be possible. The new company did not formally terminate her in a
way in which it could leave itself open for prosecution, however. It merely informed her that it would not be paying that portion of her salary she had been
receiving, and it would not guarantee that her job would be available when she was ready to return to work. It was not.
Lavelle had some difficult times, including receiving an eviction notice at Christmas. She struggled valiantly to find other employment, but apparently did not consult with any public agencies
