Lies and deceit seem to be part of the job of anyone in politics. Honesty and integrity do not make a political leader, unfortunately. In Joe Kleins novel "Primary Colors"
and Edwin OConnors novel "The Last Hurrah" we see two different, yet similar, illustrations of the institution of politics as they involve morals and ethics, or more precisely, the lack
of morals and ethics. In the following paper we examine each novel separately and then discuss the two. The Last Hurrah This particular novel focuses on Irish-American
involvement in politics and takes place in the 1950s. Frank Skeffington is the main character and he is a man with clear and powerful associations concerning the criminal world. Interestingly
enough, however, the character of Skeffington is played as a more honorable man perhaps than James Michael Curley who is clearly linked with corrupt forces in politics. In this respect
we are likely given a picture of wanting the lesser of two evils. What OConnors novel does is present us with the lack of morals and ethics, but yet
presents us with the knowledge that in Skeffingtons case we are looking at one who at least has guidelines, in regards to political ethics and morals. Again, it is the
lesser of the two evils approach, but yet an approach that clearly illustrates how far the lack of ethics and morals in the political arena can go. The character
of Curley offers the reader a very determined force regarding corruption in the system. He is a man without morals and a man who is not concerned with political history
or ethnic issues. Skeffington, on the other hand, pays attention to these realities for they are a part of who he is, and who his people are. As such we
