civic duty. Civics class is really a thing of the past. At the same time, politics is important in society. Yet, many young people distance themselves from what they perceive
to be an older persons interest and instead embrace popular culture. Still, political education is important for the young mind that will one day grow up to be part of
the nations new leadership. Looking back through time, it seems that Socrates and Machiavelli are theorists who may both be viewed as educators of politics, but what does each political
philosopher embrace in terms of political education? What are their ideals? Barber (1994) talks about political education in general terms. He says: "...on the way to distinguishing democracy from
mere rhetoric, and common action from the philosophical search for truth, I will also have something to say about political education (civic education) as it arises out of, and conditions,
my understanding of democracy" (1994, p.44). The author contends that the Socratic dialectic is far removed from the democratic political deliberation (1994). What did Socrates have to say exactly? What
did Machiavelli think about political education, and why is that so important? For Socrates, the idea is to render independent ground, whether that is through dialectical discourse or
reason (1994). Barber claims that neither approach leaves any room for politics (1994). Yet, it seems that Socrates did emphasize the importance of political education in his own way and
he would interject his own bias. In fact, in Ancient Athens, political speech was key in the development of the government and its philosophy ("Political," 2004). Athenian politics had
