event, however, they are not able to identify the specific aspects that are troubling. Today, the interest in community may have been stimulated by a sense of crisis
that social disintegration is a serious threat to the well-being of the state, precipitated by ethnic and linguistic conflicts that have expanded beyond the scope of the United States itself..
The advent of the "global village" intensifies perceived and actual inequalities in wealth, power, influence, and accessibility to goods, ideas, and information. The news of the terrorists
attack made it seem as though it were an issue of "us" and "them", which polarizes society around an issue of conformity. It puts the law abiding above the
criminal and attaches a label of vice, without allowing for individual choice or free will. There is an element of religious differentiation that has lead to instances of discrimination
and alienation of people that are, first and foremost, Americans. The present day circumstances are compared with those shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor for a variety of
reasons, among them the reaction of fear and disbelief. John Stuart Mill addressed the fatalism of his age by theorizing the principle of utility or the greatest happiness principle; which
sought for the systematic coherency of ethical philosophy through the consequences of actions. He believed that this principle was the primary consideration determining social morality, presupposed by the acquisition
