surprise in this political world where safety is always an issue. Yet, when discussing this topic, a student will want to address what tourists want. After all, if it is
true that tourism is skewed to one direction or another based upon the political disposition of a country, then it stands to reason that tourists will get less than adequate
travel experiences. Tourists not only want to be entertained, or provided with pleasurable experiences, they want an education. Thus, the authenticity of the travel experience becomes quite important. Authenticity as
a concept has been noted in many works on tourism and the quest for authenticity can have either a positive or negative effect (Jennings & Stehlik, 2002). On one hand,
cultural, ethnic, and heritage tourism and authenticity provides a means to sustain authentic cultural practices but on the other hand, there is literature which links tourism to the erosion of
authentic experiences (2002). Some texts on tourism have gone on to examine authenticity in respect to the politics of representation, and identity (2002). Authenticity is also discussed in respect
to postmodern and concepts such as the tourist gaze (2002). Quite obviously, tourism is more than it appears on the surface. It may be looked at as a part
and parcel of continuing education. In grade school, students learn about history and geography, but it is only when they grow up and choose to see a site that they
have read about that they are able to fully comprehend the nature of the education. Of course, some students are lucky enough to go see such regions while they are
