research. Instead of relying merely on a review of existing literature, one must undertake the active component of research as well, synthesizing and analyzing the findings of previous research. The
analysis of data presented in a literature review firstly involves the synthesis of that data into broad categories that can be directly related to the research problem and established purpose.
This paragraph helps the student provide a synthesis of the findings of the literature review. For instance, in order to address the fundamental research issue of whether or not the
mandated tenets of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 87 (OBRA), one must first understand, broadly, what trends are suggested by the reviews of individual pieces of relevant literature. First
and foremost, while some improvements in particular areas had been implicated by the literature review, a certain point was made abundantly clear, namely that the additional training of nurses and
staff required under OBRA had no true correlation with quality of care (Kelly, 1989). This is not to say, of course, that OBRA has been an entirely ineffective piece of
legislature, but simply that it had not had the broad significant impact upon quality of care in long term care facilities that it was intended to achieve. Looking at more
specific indicators, however, one can see from the literature review that there are a few areas where OBRA has substantially impacted the scope and shape of long term care quality.
One of these, and perhaps the most significantly, is the practice of infection control and sanitation (Butler & Erickson, 1997). According to several studies, infection control was one of the
