both individuals and families should reassess their priorities and do whatever is possible to balance their work with "down-time." In her research, Schor found that over the past thirty years
(the book was published in 1991) or since the 1960s, the typical American worker has increased his or her time spent at the job by approximately 160 hours, an entire
month of a 40-hour work weeks! She points out that this means that Americans are now working 13 "month-years." The end result has been that workers are more stressed
and over-worked than at any other time in modern history. The policy implications of this fact are truly remarkable. Less time with family means less direction and supervision of children,
less time spent with ones spouse and, obviously, less time spent on personal interests and simple enjoyment. The impact in terms of mental health, the well-being or cohesiveness of the
family, the divorce rate, and all of the other related issues, is enormous. The student working on this project will best be able to analyze Schors findings through a careful
definition of the problem, understanding the extent of it, considering how it came about, and then determining possible changes that can be made. The student should not hesitate to underscore
the ways in which they have personally experienced or witnessed the effects of being or living with an "overworked American." What is the Problem and How Pervasive is It? In
