The prevalence of domestic violence against women can be traced back for centuries to the influence of religion. Readily recognized throughout history is how patriarchy has been
responsible for designing womens social, economic and political role; many of these devices used in earlier times were related to religious conviction. Certain scripture regularly challenged women to disprove
their inferiority - to disagree was sacrilege. Women had a practical, more egalitarian relationship with men in society for some forty thousand years, which was directly related to the
need for a shared responsibility for survival. This began to change, however, when men became associated with the male figure of God, at which point ideals began to shift
toward the notion of male superiority. Once the ideal fully developed, the belief of male superiority gained significant strength - forever to be supported by evolving religious doctrines.
Now, in the twenty-first century, women still face abuse at the hands of their husbands, a method by which men attempt to maintain control
over what their wives and/or partners say and do. Whether real or perceived, the misbehavior that warrants punishment is meant to keep vulnerable women in their place of inferiority
