to provide the strong arm of the law, while ignoring the law, something that has come to be known as police brutality. Occasionally, suspects are beaten. This is true in
the United States, but it is something that has been known to happen in Ireland for example. Police officers get out of hand everywhere in the world. Of course, brutality
is the exception rather than the rule, but in examining policing, hierarchy, police culture and all things pertaining to law enforcement, it seems that there are both differences and similarities.
This becomes quite apparent when exploring the role of the police department throughout the world. How do police forces around the world compare with that of the United States? Police
culture in America is unfortunately represented by the blue wall of silence, but that is only one aspect of police culture in America. The idea of police culture came about
"from ethnographic studies of routine police work which uncovered a layer of informal occupational norms and values operating under the apparently rigid hierarchical structure..." (Chan, 1997, p.43). In other words,
certain commonalities came to the forefront to define police work and police culture. The Blue Wall of Silence is simply one factor in evaluating Police culture, but the fact that
it exists should not overshadow the overall culture. This camaraderie, and a sense that police officers stick together, is only a part of the police culture. It should be noted
that despite the fact that police forces are not connected through the nation-they are local entities-they each contain certain similar protocols. The officers wear uniforms, carry guns, work in a
hierarchal organization and embrace certain strict rules. There is little flexibility or leniency in policing, though officers do have some discretion. At least, they do have to follow the law
