was of course the National Guard for example that would crop up around the time that the Revolution began, and then there were other services available throughout the eighteenth century,
but these were largely scattered. Of course, the antics that would take place in Paris, that were not nearly as important as the storming of the Bastille, were sometimes
humorous and seemingly inconsequential. For example, in 1808, M. De Grandpre argued with M. Le Pique about a woman and the two agreed to fight a duel in floating balloons
that went high above Paris (McCutcheon, 1993). It is quite a picture for the imagination. However, the ending of this story is not humorous at all and there were
consequences for this particular historic episode. In the end, both men plunged to their deaths in their balloons (1993). Yet, other things would crop up in Paris and during the
1800s, one could say that it was not a very dangerous place at all. By and large, the people of Paris were rather civil, but it pays to look at
the times in which they lived first. There were dangers of fire and there was some crime too. Unlike today, where everyone has a smoke detector and fire extinguisher, as
well as firearms to ward off criminals, things were much simpler in those days. Of course, today, there are police and fire departments that may be called at a moments
notice and this was something that was lacking in eighteenth century Paris. There was however a law in Paris that for every 10,000 people (Cohen, 1998, p. 80 ) there
had to be a central commissioner. For the most part, the regions did not abide by the rule but in 1833 there would be pressure to conform (1998). One can
