custody. Protocol dictates that suspects must receive medical help if necessary and also, that they be treated with a degree of respect. After all, they are suspects and not convicted
at the time of an arrest. They are entitled to certain rights at the time of arrest such as being read rights and being treated fairly. In the American system
of justice, everyone is entitled to a day in court and are presumed innocent unless they are convicted of a crime. It seems that because criminal justice is such that
police are on the front lines, and it is important to preserve the integrity of the system, the use of police force is an important topic. In an article entitled
"Police Use of Force" by William Terrill (2005), the author talks about how researchers have looked at the use of force as exhibited by police officers. The information contained in
this article uses Tedeschi and Felsons ideas as a springboard for discussion along with data from other sources (Terrill, 2005). The research contained in this article demonstrates that when a
subject is either resistant or non-resistant, the use of force changes (Terrill, 2005). In other words, the officers act in accordance with how the suspect reacts. This is of course
an idea that makes sense. After all, police are more likely to react one way if a suspect is compliant versus a suspect that is seemingly out of control. In
fact, the protocol dictates that this should be the case. An officer is supposed to treat a suspect in a matter of fact way, but if that suspect becomes dangerous,
