apply it to those in authoritarian positions. Police officers, for example, are in a position to make a very real difference in our lives according to how they perceive
a situation and deal with it. Fortunately, most often our interactions with police personnel are positive. It is interesting to ask, however, just why does a police officer
choose the law enforcement field. Is it because they have an innate tendency towards authoritarianism (some would call this a predispositional personality) or is this tendency something they acquire
through socialization and experience once they have entered the profession? Opinions are divided as to the answer to these questions. The intent of this paper is to demonstrate
that police personality can indeed be shaped around unique traits that those that choose to enter this profession innately possess, i.e. that certain individuals are predisposed to enter this field
while others are not. It is important to clarify, however, that it is unlikely that all personality traits that are associated with police officers are innate. Indeed, it
is likely that many of these traits are actually acquired after the career choice has been made and occur as a result of socialization and experience rather than predisposition.
Interestingly, authoritarianism is only one of the many traits that the literature has associated with police officers. Dantzker (2005, 271) identifies cynicism, racism,
hostility, secretiveness, and loyalty as additional traits that characterize the profession. While authoritarianism and loyalty can be of direct benefit in law enforcement, traits such as cynicism, racism, hostility,
