necessary. Hence, staffing a police department properly has become very important. The element of staffing as it refers to a police department is generally known as recruitment, at least as
it respects officers. The definition of "staffing," as submitted by a student, is: "The selection of a body of workers to assist the executive; the selection and training of the
best-qualified available workers; the maintenance of favorable working conditions." Police departments do have difficulty staffing, or recruiting, and the problem has plagued departments through the course of decades. There have
been many issues to crop up in terms of recruiting and these include salary issues as well as those concerning education. Other issues go to honesty and the fact that
in order to sustain a valuable and viable police force, officers must be under control. A loose cannon can wreak havoc, and taint the reputation of a police department so
staffing must be done very carefully. First, salaries vary and while some contend they are too low, others think that starting salaries are rather high. One study reports that average
salary for an officer is close to $40,000 but for supervisors that average amount exceeded $57, 000 ("Police"). While many officers stay within their districts, some join the FBI for
which salaries commanded get close to six figures at the highest levels ("Police"). That does not seem like much when compared with what the private sector ordinarily pays for its
executives. Still, police work is an occupation that is generally entered for the love of the work and a desire to help others. Some police officers inadvertently become celebrities and
write books like Chief Moose who is well known for his handling of the D.C. sniper investigation and Mark Furhman of O.J. Simpson case fame. While some might suggest that
