The following examination of this topic draws on Delattres text, as well as other sources, to present a synthesis of practical law enforcement ideologies. Character Types The uncontrolled character: Individuals who have uncontrolled behavioral characteristics can be similar to individuals with bad character, especially if emotions are allowed to overcome respect for the law (Delattre, 2011). Anyone who is has a weak will or is easily tempted may be capable of learning, but these individuals do not belong in positions of public trust (Delattre, 2011). The self-controlled officer: Some officers who possess self-discipline may abide by the law, but still resent that they are held to a higher standard of conduct than those they apprehend (Delattre, 2011). They may be plagued by frustration and resentment that comes from seeing miscreants get away with illegal behavior, which leads to "persistent tension between duty and desire" (Delattre, 2011, p. 11). This is why police departments need to offer support and promotion leadership that generates moral behavior in the "fact of temptation and discouragement" (Delattre, 2011, p. 11). The excellent officer: Fortunately for society, some law enforcement officers possess excellent character, which means that trustworthiness, and respect and love for honesty are factors that are integrated into their personalities (Delattre, 2011). As with the self-controlled officer, these law enforcement professionals do their duty, but they also enjoy peace of mind as illegal profit holds no temptation for them and they can "be said to be truly incorruptible" (Delattre, 2011, p. 11).
