Britain to the EU, and what the future might hold for these relationships. Discussion Present relationships with the EU: Britain has been a member of the EU since 1973 but
Poland was only admitted in 2004. Although Britain is an influential and active member of the EU, British citizens have grown disenchanted with it and support for membership has fallen
over the last decade (Her Majesty the Queen announces the European Union bill, 2010). At this time, however, there is no serious consideration of Britain withdrawing from the EU. The
current relationship between Poland and the EU seems much more positive than the one between Britain and the Union. It may be that Polands later entry means that the "honeymoon
period" is still in effect, but according to a report released in 2008, "78% of Poles support Polish membership in the EU. Although the period from May 2007 to May
2008 was full of political events ... Poles positively assess Polish prospects in the united Europe. 69% of citizens believe that, within 10-20 years, Poland will benefit from the membership
in the EU" (Wisniewski et al., 2008, p. 8). Future relationship: The British relationship with the EU seems to be in trouble. As noted above, the support for British membership
is declining, and continued membership was debated before the 2009 EU Parliamentary elections. According to an article in the Social Europe Journal, Britons who are critical of EU membership are
