Von Huben 9/2010 Please Introduction In literature, "point of view" refers to whos telling the story, and it can be crucial to a readers understanding. This paper compares the point of view in Willa Cathers "Pauls Case" and Amy Tans "Rules of the Game." It argues that the omniscient viewpoint used by Cather is easier for a reader to interpret than the first-person narration of Tans character. Discussion "Pauls Case" is a disturbing portrait of a young mans suicide, told by an omniscient narrator, meaning a narrator who has access to everything going on in the story. He or she can not only see the action of each character but he can access the characters thoughts and feelings. This is the viewpoint that gives the most rounded picture of the events that the author relates. The first thing a reader notices is that there is almost no dialogue in "Pauls Case"; there are only two brief bits of speech. Paul says, "I dont know... I didnt mean to be polite or impolite, either. I guess its a sort of way I have of saying things regardless" (Cather). A paragraph later, one of his teachers, his drawing master (art teacher) has a speech of four sentences, the last one being "There is something wrong about the fellow" (Cather). That is, Pauls teachers dont know what to make of him but find him odd and even threatening while he is unaware of his own actions and by implication, of his motivations as well. ...
