This paper examines Platos comments in The Republic as they concern poetry. Book III In Book III, Socrates and Adeimantus are discussing the types of written works that people
should be allowed to be read. It seems like Plato is actually poking fun, very slyly, at the whole idea of censorship, because if they cut out all the
material they deem objectionable, there wont be anything left. First, they want to cut out any tales that might cause a man to have a fear of death, which means
that most of the works about theology will not be allowed. They dont believe that a man whos afraid to die will be able to fight well, so they
opt for keeping such tales away from anyone who might have to fight in a battle. They decide to eliminate "many obnoxious passages, beginning with the verses" and actually
go through the verses to see which ones should be excised (Plato). They start dissecting the mythology as well, and decide to get rid of any references to things
like Hades and the underworld; Tiresias the blind seer; and other references to death and dying (Plato). They decide they have to talk to Homer and other poets, and
tell them that theyre going to strike out various passages from their works, but not to be angry about it (Plato). They even decide theyll have to "reject all
the terrible and appalling names" that describe the Underworld, such as Cocytus and Styx" because even to mention such things "causes a shudder to pass through the inmost soul of
