same in any other period of history, focused a great deal of their work on that which the society was imbedded within. Because religion was a large portion of the
society, these artists often portrayed aspects of religion and God. However, also like any other period of time, the artists turned away from that which was commonly examined, and offered
their own views of life and love. In regards to the poets of the 17th century we note a great deal of focus on God as it involves true love.
But, there was also an element of sexual romantic love as well. In the following paper we examine the poetry of John Donne, Ben Jonson, Robert Herrick, and George
Herbert, illustrating how one focused on the love of God, some on women and God, and one on women and nature. In this we see that while God was a
powerful influence for many poets, some stretched outside the social boundaries and looked at natural love as well. In this respect they are not perhaps any different than poets of
any other time as they look at love and try to make sense of it religiously or otherwise John Donne Donne was know for writing poetry that was a
celebration of Gods love, as well as a poet that addressed the purity of a love for a woman. In better understanding this we discuss two different poems, "Holy Sonnets:
Since she whom I lovd hath paid her last debt" and "Loves Alchemy." In "Loves Alchemy" Donne is looking at the reality of love, or the power of love, stating,
