violent. The wind "tore the elm-tops down for spite" (Browning [2] 3). This sort of introduction allows the reader to understand that the environment was dangerous, and sets the stage for some disaster. If the weather were sunny and bright the reader would not get the impression that impending disaster, or some major event, was about to happen. When Porphyria arrives she immediately closes the door against the weather, starts the fire up, and takes off her outerwear. Porphyria essentially sets the environment inside as warm and protective and then sits next to her lover and calls to him. He does not answer and she takes his arm to put around her waist and then lays her head on his shoulder, loving him. The narrator is obviously uncertain about her love as seen when he sudeenly realizes she does love him after all, stating, "Happy and proud; at last I knew/ Porphyria worshipped me; surprise" (Browning [2] 32-33). At this point his heart swells bigger and bigger and he then turns to strangle her with her own hair. She does not struggle at all and it does not seem to be dramatic, but at the same time the calmness of it all makes it quite dramatic. The narrator does not see the action as dramatic, however, and simply "oped her lids: again" (Browning [2] 44). He arranges her once more in her living position, hair splayed out and her head on his shoulder as though nothing happened. It becomes clear that the narrator has killed her because he has a lot of difficulty believing she really loved him. He obviously does not trust women it ...
